Side Collision Warning Systems for Transit Buses

چکیده
Transit buses are involved in many more accidents than other vehicles. Collision Warning Systems (CWS) are therefore placed most efficiently on these buses. In our project, we investigate their operating environment and available technologies to develop performance specifications for such CWS. This paper discusses our findings of transit buses driving through very cluttered surroundings and being involved in many different types of accidents where currently available CWS do not work effectively. One of the focuses of our work is pedestrians around the bus and

Collision Warning and Sensor Data Processing in Urban Areas
Providing drivers with comprehensive assistance systems has long been a goal for the automotive industry. The challenge is on many fronts, from building sensors, analyzing sensor data, automated understanding of traffic situations and appropriate interaction with the driver. These issues are discussed with the example of a collision warning system for transit buses.
متن کاملTrends in Transit Bus Accidents and Promising Collision Countermeasures
This article presents information on bus collisions from the National Transit Database (NTD) and discusses implications of the findings on the design of transit collision warning systems. A total of 2,405 major transit bus collisions were reported in 2002 and 2003 that resulted in more than $15 million in property damage, 145 fatalities, and more than 8,000 injuries. According to the NTD, front...
متن کاملIntelligent Transportation Systems: A Compendium of Technology Summaries
Overview of the Summaries Many sources provide good information on Intelligent Transportation Systems concepts and applications. However, some of these sources are highly technical and others are lengthy treatments of the subject. The summaries presented here are designed for the busy, non-technical reader who: • wants to find out what a particular ITS application is intended for-ramp metering,...
متن کاملEvaluation of Camera-Based Systems to Reduce Transit Bus Side Collisions
continued on page 3 Mirror-based systems have evolved over the years because of the need to provide a better view to the driver and now include more than one mirror with different magnifications. However, current mirror-based systems have several limitations. First, they do not cover the whole side area of the vehicle, thus leaving what are referred to as “blind zones.” This brings the bus driv...
متن کاملPedestrian Collision Warning for SEPTA Buses
We propose to research the problem of detecting and preventing imminent collisions between buses and pedestrians. GPS and inertial sensor measurements will be fused to analyze bus motion, and other sensors, such as laser scanners, will detect pedestrians in danger. Appropriate algorithms will be developed to anticipate collisions, and warn the driver and pedestrians through various channels. On...
